In 2019, New York joined a small, but mighty group of forward thinking states. These original six passed legislation to protect patients facing infertility as a side effect from life saving medical treatment. Though many New York insurance carriers are now legally compelled to cover fertility preservation cycles, there are still many patients that don’t receive this coverage, including those with Medicaid. A2686 sponsored by Assembly Member Alex Bores seeks the inclusion of iatrogenic infertility coverage as part of Medicaid plans in New York State. Critical treatment for a wide variety of diseases affecting patients during childbearing years may cause infertility, a harrowing fact in situations that are frequently life or death. In these cases, decisions – serious decisions – often need to be taken quickly. Chemotherapy, for example, while effective as a cancer treatment, will often end dreams of a future family, unless costly fertility saving procedures are undertaken. Cost, in these moments of crisis, should never be a consideration.

At any socioeconomic level in our state, the choice between saving your life with necessary medical treatment at the cost of never being able to have a family is absolutely crushing. Medicaid provides no coverage for the massive publicly-insured population of New York, and the expansion of coverage in this bill is vital. These procedures are not elective, they are not luxuries – they are essential for any New Yorker to have children, regardless of what life-saving treatment they have to undergo.

There is already precedence in our state for this sort of coverage.  In 2019, New York mandated private insurance to cover fertility preservation treatment. This is just the logical next step – if those that can afford to have private insurance are protected, why aren’t those on Medicaid? I am proud to say that this bill has my full support, and I hope to see it passed as soon as possible, for the safety and happiness of so many in our state.
