My name is_____. I am proud to share I am a cancer survivor who fought and won three battles with cancer during my 30s. My experience with cancer meant that my life saving treatment had a direct effect on my ability to become a biological mother.

As your constituent, I am writing to secure support for an issue that is very important to myself and my family.

It is not well known that many medically necessary treatments for young adults (18-40) diagnosed with cancer, lupus and sickle cell disease have a high likelihood for an irreversible side effect : Infertility.

Before undergoing fertility threatening protocols (chemotherapy, radiation, etc.), patients have an option to preserve fertility however these procedures are not covered by most insurance companies in the United States.

I would like to change that.

There are prohibitive out-of-pocket costs to preserve fertility ahead of treatment; it also poses a real risk to the health and longevity of patients during and after they’ve gone through treatment for these diseases. For example, many women choose a less toxic dose of chemotherapy to mitigate potential effects on future fertility - even if it means their illness may come back. All Georgians should have access to preserving their options ahead of the treatment that will save their lives, but end their dreams of family.

I am working with The Chick Mission and a broader coalition of cancer patients, health care providers, and supporters of HB 94 sponsored by Representative Eddie Lumsden, to advocate the passing of HB 94.

This bill would require health benefit plans regulated by the State of Georgia to provide coverage for fertility preservation service to a covered individual who will receive a medically necessary treatment that the American Society of Clinical Oncology or the American Society for Reproductive Medicine has established may directly or indirectly cause impaired fertility.

As your constituent, I urge you to take a stand for young adult cancer patients in the state of Georgia and consider supporting this important legislation.
